You may have heard of mindfulness, how it helps you relax, how it can help improve mental health and very popularly, how mindful eating can help you lose weight. So now, What is mindfulness and why is it so important?

What is mindfulness

Mindfulness simply means being present

. It is the ability to be present, to be conscious of where you are, what you are doing and simply being in the moment. It also involves not being overwhelmed and over sensitive of what is in the moment. It involves your mind being fully aware of what you are doing, where you are and how everything is going on- presently. Unfortunately, people don’t practice mindfulness or are not always mindful. We get so consumed with other thoughts that we become unaware of the present. Our thoughts drift our minds away from the present, we are either worrying about the past, worrying and feeling anxious about the future, all these thought and emotions can lead to anxiety or other mental health problems. Whenever you make conscious effort(s) to be aware you bring your mind to the present, you are being mindful.

The difference between mindfulness and meditation

The difference is very simple meditation requires you to be mindful at a particular which is during the meditation itself. However, mindfulness is kind of like a lifestyle, you can apply it in every aspect of the day. Also, meditation eliminates stress, but mindfulness helps you handle stress better, if you are more aware, you will handle mindfulness better. Meditation is the pre-school for mindfulness, practicing meditation gives a preview of practicing mindfulness. You eventually get to practice mindfulness all day everyday.

The benefit pf mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness has a lot of psychological and physical benefits, here are a few.

1.Mindfulness may help improve sleep quality

Sometimes we try to sleep and it doesn’t work, we do everything that could possibly help us get better sleep, but we may eventually not fall asleep. Being mindful may help this situation, when you make conscious efforts to pause and be in the present, to block thoughts that are running through our mind, to calm down and not get angry when we don’t fall asleep. We will improve our sleep eventually. We will eventually arrive at getting better sleep without using teas for sleep.

2.Mindfulness may help lose weight or prevent obesity

When we practice mindful eating which is being present and conscious and aware of what we eat, we are more conscious and can actually think about what we eat, in what quantities and when we eat before we make the choice to eat. This can help us make healthier food choices and healthy food quantities. This results in overall general weight loss and healthy habits being cultivated. Pregnant women who practice mindful eating gain less weight and cultivate healthy habits during the pregnancy and after the pregnancy. Also, their babies are healthier babies.

3.Mindfulness helps families build and maintain healthy relationships

When a child does something like breaking the furniture, our immediate reaction is either usually to get angry, to scold angrily, to blame, to yell or even get really aggressive. Practicing mindfulness can help determine what reaction to give at that time, why? Because mindfulness helps makes the parent pause and think about what to do, how to do it, what to say, how to say it, and so much more. This is just an example, but it shows how parents can build healthier relationships with kids. Kids tend to copy parents’ behaviours, so they also imitate mindful habits. It also prevents anger, anxiety, and stress in new moms and prevent the typical angry mom.

4.Mindfulness improves relationships

Mindfulness can also be practiced in relationships. Research has shown that couples that practice mindfulness are more contented with each other and with their relationship. They tend to get over misunderstanding and conflict easier and faster. They are also more optimistic about each other and their relationship.

5.It can help build a healthy mindset

Being mindful reduces stress and gets rid of negativity. It also increases positivity and reduces chances of mental health conditions like depression.

6.Practicing mindfulness may help teenagers

These days a lot of teenagers are depressed or overwhelmed by the change they may be going through, like the change in their bodies or transitioning to university (college). Practicing mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety and prevent depression. It can help them cultivate good habits as they grow like preventing addiction or substance abuse, planning their finances, etc.

7.It helps improve focus and determination

If you are mindful, you have the ability to block out unwanted or distracting thoughts and focus on the task at hand. This can help you complete the task easily and fast. It can also help you to be more determined about completing other tasks easier and faster than the previous task. This example can be seen in working out, your thoughts can drive you away from working out or even during workouts. However, if you practice mindfulness, you may workout better, faster and easier. This will make you more determined and help you workout even better, faster and easier than before, thereby cultivating good habits and achieve weight loss.

8.It may improve self-esteem:

Mindful people tend to love themselves more, be more compassionate and kinder to themselves and they tend to have a healthy self-image. They tend to have a high-value mindset and tend to be more resilient. This makes them very positive, and very confident in themselves, their bodies and their abilities.
