Depression is a cause of low self-esteem . The rising number of people living with depression is quite alarming. Depression was even the theme for world health day 2017. According to the mayo clinic, women are diagnosed with depression more often than men. Depression over a long period of time can lead to low- self esteem and low-self confidence . Studies show that Illnesses, abandonment, traumatic childhood experiences, constant criticism (especially about their looks and appearance), life events, negetive messages, feeling of lack of love, loneliness and lack of support can all cause depression and low-self esteem. Women with low self-esteem constantly have a feeling of not being enough, incapable and unworthy. They constantly see the world in a negetive view.

Steps to uplift your self-esteem and self confidence.

Self-esteem and self-confidence though different, one can sometimes influence the other.

Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves, our worth.
Self-confidence is how we feel about our abilities.
This shows that high self-esteem can improve self-confidence and vice-versa. Now how to achieve that:

1. Re-imagine everything and improve on yourself: change the way you see yourself and everything everything around you, how you feel about yourself, your abilities and everything around you and try to improve on yourself.

Try to turn a negetive situation into a positive one. Try to find the roots of the cause of yourself esteem and self confidence. If your self-esteem or self confidence is being lowered because of something you have failed at, for example, a job interview, reflect on why you failed and try to improve on the reason, you may even get a better job when you realise your mistake and improve.

2. Accept your flaws: Relax! Nobody is perfect. Everybody makes mistakes. It is ok to make a mistake. Be ok with yourself and feel the need to improve. Don’t beat yourself up and feel like a failure or like you are not enough. Besides, just because one thing went bad doesn’t mean everything else will be awful.

3. Surround yourself with positive people and positive thoughts. Develop a sense of optimism. Positive people are encouraging, supportive and they always look on the bright side. They will help in changing your mindset and thoughts thereby gradually up-lifting your self-esteem and self-confidence. Through these, you start to develop a sense of optimism. This helps you grow out of your pessimistic self. If things don’t go as planned, it is okay. Look on the bright side.

4. Believe in yourself, try out new things and be self reliant. Carry out tasks and assignments with the belief that you can do it. This gives you a boost of confidence. Also, trying out new things by testing yourself at new ventures ( maybe something out of your comfort zone) is a step to be self- reliant. Knowing that you can rely on yourself gives you a sense of self-contentment.

5. Get help!
Get help if you need to. Some women may need the help of a therapist to overcome depression, low self-esteem and low self-confidence.
