What is the difference between being vegan and being a vegetarian?
There is a trend of not eating meat or animal products, vegan and vegetarian are often used interchangeably, but is there really a difference?

What is Veganism?
Veganism is a less-flexible or rather, stricter vegetarian. Vegans do not consume or use anything derived from animals. Veganism is considered a lifestyle where anything derived from any form of animal slaughter, cruelty to animals, animal exploitation is avoided as much as possible. This is not limited to food; clothing, cosmetics and other lifestyle related products are also included.
Vegans do not consume any food containing anything animal-derived , strict vegans extend this to products like leather, wool, soaps, beeswax. These strict vegetarians also avoid most products that involve animal testing.
Which is healthier?
Both diets encourage consumption of nutrient-rich vegetables, however, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
For example, lacto-vegetarians may get Vitamin D from milk, however, vegans consume no eggs and no dairy so, they keep their cholesterol level at a minimal but they are also more likely to be deficient of essential Omega 3 fatty acids: DHA and EPA, this can occur even though they consume plant sources of EPA and DHA. DHA is necessary for brain function. It is easily obtained from eggs and seafood.
Also, if either diet is not accurately planned, consequences may be low intake of some essential nutrients like calcium, zinc, iron, and vitamin D. Both diets may also lead to deficiency of vitamin B12, however, tendency of this happening is higher in vegans. Vegans are less likely to become obese and are less likely to gain weight as they age, however they are more prone to nutritional deficiencies.
