Starting the school year can be sometimes challenging for parents and children.
There are a lot of things to prepare for: New school bags, new pencils, new clothes but the most important one will starting the school year in good health.

Here a few tips to guide you through:

1. Good nutrition: childhood obesity is on the rise, children affected with childhood obesity are at higher risk of diseases. There a few ways to help improve your child’s nutrients and calorie intake:

– provide healthy meal options, studies show that 40% of calories consumed by 2-18 year olds are empty calories from solid fats and added sugars.

– Start the day with breakfast: students who eat breakfast are more alert during class than those who don’t.

– if you have a picky eater, introduce new foods frequently and become a role model for a healthy diet.
– Teach kids about nutrition, this book is a good place to start

2. Reinstate routines and cultivate new healthy habits: children and adults often lose sleep due to use of digital devices. A few weeks to school resumption, change your kids’ bedtime routines from holiday bedtime routines to bedtime routines that coordinate with school schedules. This may be difficult initially, especially because your kids may have gotten used to the relaxed life. You can get help by reading this book about kids and routines. It is the perfect guide for reinstating routines.

Sleep is as important as diet and exercise, most school-aged children need about 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
Encourage reading books before bedtime but avoid use of digital devices and exercise before bedtime. Also cultivating new habits like hand-washing can help improve the health of a child. According to the mayo clinic, the most effective way to avoid spreading germs and catching germs is by hand-washing. Teach them how to wash their hands.

Enlighten them about the benefits of hand washing and help them to make it a habit. Hand-washing using water and soap will be fine but a hand sanitizer can help in the absence of water and soap.

3. Immunizations
Make sure your child’s immunizations are up to date, according vaccine.org, alot of serious illnesses can be prevented by vaccines

Also, a lot of schools require students to be vaccinated before resuming school.
Flu-vaccines are recommended for children of all school ages except in the case of allergy.

4. Annual check-ups should be carried out to ensure your child is healthy before going back to school, also carry out your own physical check-ups, check for poor vision, head lice ( enlighten your child about the importance of sharing combs, hats, caps, clothes), and scoliosis (check for un-even shoulders, hips).


5. Personal care
: trim your child’s nails, a lot germs and bacteria can be carried through nails, it is important to take note of this, also inspect oral care. Dental infections can be dangerous, check for cavities.
