Cancer is the number one killer disease in developed countries. According to The World Health Organisation, 8.8 million people died of cancer in 2015
There are so many things that can cause cancers but most cancer cases are actually preventable. Yes. You read that correctly.

1. Cancer can actually be cured. Yes again, you read that correctly. Cancer can actually by cured. Though this depends on so many factors like; the type of cancer, organ affected, stage and grade of the cancer.Cancer can be cured and cancer patients can be cancer free.

2. There are up to 200 types of cancer. Cancer of different organs of the body have diffent names. Like: leukemia:cancer of the blood cells, lymphoma: cancer of the lymphnodes etc

The most common cancer killers in females are (in order of frequency): breast, lung, colorectal, cervical and stomach
The most common cancer killers in males are (in order of frequency): lung, liver, stomach, colorectal and prostrate.

3. Some cancers can be prevented by vaccines.There vaccines available for Human papilloma virus types 18 and 16 (which are known to cause 70% of cervical cancers) and for Hepatitis b virus which can cause some liver cancers.

4. There are so many causes and risk factors of cancer. Some can initiate disordered growth which can lead to cancer. Some of the causes of cancer are:

Bacteria and viruses: Helicobacter pylori, Epstein- Barr virus(EBV) , HPV, hepatitis B and C etc

Chemical compounds: benzene, , nickel, asbestos, N-nitrosamines, asbestos

Ionizing radiation: Ultraviolet rays from sunlight, sources of X-ray emittion

Genes and Family history.

5. Cigarette smoke contains up to 66 chemicals and toxin that have carcinogenic properties (carcinogens are substances that have the tendency to cause cancer).

6. Smoking causes at least 15 different types of cancers. According to The World Health Organisation, tobacco is responsible for about 22% of all cancer death.

7. According to The World Health organisation, 30-50 % of all cancer cases are preventble and the largest preventable cause of cancer in the world is tobacco use or smoking.

8. Genes play a role in cancer development. If a person has a parent with a genetic mutation or a family history of genetic mutations , the person has a higher risk of developing cancer. Though experts say genes only play a 5% role in cancer development.

9. Diet plays a major role in cancer. Apart from genetics, diet can have a direct effect on cancer. Obesity is the second largest preventable cause of cancer after smoking or tobacco. Hence, a balanced diet and health body weight can help prevent cancer.
Also, some foods like salt preserved foods, red meat, processed meat may increase the risk of cancer development while fruits, vegetables, and fibre-rich foods may help prevent cancer.

10. About 9.6 million people die of cancer every year. About 70% of cancer deaths occur in low and middle income countries.
